Dr. Chesbrough
does research on managing technology and innovation, including the
spinoff and commercialization strategies of research labs such as Bell
Labs and Xerox PARC. He has also studied the industry dynamics of the
global disk drive industry.
His book Open Innovation: The New Imperative
(HBS Press, 2003) proposes open innovation as a new paradigm for
organizing and managing R&D. He is interested in how firms combine
the use of external and internal sources of technologies, and markets
them internal and external paths. He has also written about open
innovation for Sloan Management Review, Research-Technology Management, and Intel Technical Journal.
His latest book is Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm (Oxford, 2006).
Dr. Chesbrough is a frequent speaker on open innovation at industry and academic events, as well as a consultant to leading companies on three continents.
