For this reason, he said the pace of innovation to reduce energy consumption and create a smarter, more sustainable planet is critical. Curley, who was speaking at the Open Innovation 2.0 conference at Dublin Castle May 20, said that at the current pace the Earth is consuming 1.3 times its current resources. He said this presents a massive challenge in terms of creating better models of energy consumption. “We need to enter an era of mass collaboration,” he added.

Thoughts on Open Innovation http://www.openinnovation.net/open-innovation/thoughts-on-open-innovation/ http://www.openinnovation.net/open-innovation/thoughts-on-open-innovation/#comments Sat, 18 May 2013 13:29:26 +0000 OIC Editor http://www.openinnovation.net/?p=4133 The ConsortiumInfo.org website notes that the benefits of open innovation are increasingly recognized today, in part because the Internet has made it possible for so many to collaborate about so much so easily. Governments (e.g., in the U.K.) in particular are beginning to embrace the concept in areas like open data that hold enormous promise, not only for making progress possible in multiple domains, but also to help create new possibilities for domestic entrepreneurship. A new book of essays titled “Thoughts on Open Innovation” explores these issues.

Chesbrough on Open Innovation in Life Sciences http://www.openinnovation.net/featured/chesbrough-on-open-innovation-in-life-sciences/ http://www.openinnovation.net/featured/chesbrough-on-open-innovation-in-life-sciences/#comments Fri, 10 May 2013 23:48:46 +0000 OIC Editor http://www.openinnovation.net/?p=4100 The journal Nature published an interview with Henry Chesbeough. The article noted that open innovation has taken the business world by storm. In his 2003 breakout book, Chesbrough argued — based largely on observations of the computer industry — that companies need to look beyond their walls to thrive. Gone are the days when in-house research and development (R&D) muscle alone could dominate markets . The future’s giants will get the best bang for their research buck by bringing external ideas in and by letting internal ideas out. For drug discoverers, who have been battered by poor R&D returns, the promise of open innovation is appealing. Drug companies are increasingly talking the talk of open innovation and experimenting with academic collaborations, licensing deals, spin-outs and acquisitions.

Dissecting open innovation http://www.openinnovation.net/open-innovation/dissecting-open-innovation/ http://www.openinnovation.net/open-innovation/dissecting-open-innovation/#comments Thu, 02 May 2013 11:41:50 +0000 OIC Editor http://www.openinnovation.net/?p=4083 The Association for Project Management website posted a slide show and article on open innovation and intellectual property. In taking up when and how to practice open innovation, it is vitally important to understand what the external party is seeking from a relationship as this will heavily influence the success of any such venture. Talking about differing objectives leads nicely into the question of legal agreements and the article provides an insight into these.  Firstly, they must form an integral part of any collaboration between two parties, whether they be companies or individuals.  Secondly, there are common pitfalls within legal agreements that may be exploited by the larger of the parties to the detriment of the smaller.
